I am so proud to call you Cousin, as you are a first cousin to my Patriot, also named Joseph Martin. We descend from Susannah North Martin, hanged in 1692 as a witch in Salem, MA. The family genes still run strong and our blood runs red, white & blue. God Bless America! "At Uncle Joe's I liv'd at ease; Had cider, and good bread and cheese; But while I stay'd at Uncle Sam's I'd nought to eat but'faith & clams.'" --Joseph Plumb Martin

In 1836, a platoon of United States Light Infantry was marching though the town of Prospect and discovered that Joseph Plumb Martin resided there. The platoon stopped outside of his house and fired a salute in honor of the Revolutionary War Hero. I wish to add my salute to this warrior all these many years later.

The liberties of our country, the freedom of our civil constitution, are worth defending at all hazards and it is our duty to defend them against all attacks. We have received them as a fair inheritance from our worthy ancestors; they purchased them for us with toil and danger and expense of treasure and blood. ~Samuel Adams~

To Joseph Plumb Martin, Praise be for your accurate portrayal of the war of "Independency". Without your heartfelt account of the most important event in American history, the sacrifices you gave to your country would be forever lost. All my thanks to you, from a Mainer who is grateful, Carol

Every elected representative and president of the United States should be REQUIRED to read Mr. Martin's narrative. I wish I could thank him for his service....

I wonder what this soldier would say about the state of this country after such a hard won victory and sacrifice made by him and others...i dare say that he would probably weep to see what we have done with the legacy that he left us :-(.

Because of people like you, we have what we have today. It is all due to the Revolutionary War soldier who made it possible. We are eternally grateful.

Sgt. Martin: Not long ago I read your words as you 'translated' them from your diary. Having read and owning over 60 books written about The American Revolutionary period, it is from your words, sir, giving clarity to the efforts of The American soldier of that day. You are so very clear with your descriptions and your side comentary at times makes, as you say, I,"The Reader", feel as if I know you Good Sir. How wonderful that would be. Thank you so much for your service to the forming of this Country and thank you sir for taking the time to help us understand what it took for you to get through it...for the good of strangers yet to come.

To the original GI Joe: You were around for the very first Glorious Fourth; then you and your comrades took up arms to give its ideals life with your own lives. And so many others have followed you. God Bless you and all of them Joe, and thanks -- from the bottom of our hearts, always.

On this Memorial Day all Americans should remember those who, like Joseph Plumb Martin, sacrificed and suffered so that we could be free. Thank you, Joseph, for being a member of this country's army in the days when men's souls were truly being tried.
