Philip Heater enlisted in Company "A", Independent Loudoun Virginia Rangers (USA) on Jan. 27, 1863, at Point of Rocks, Md. for three years. He was captured in action at Goresville, Loudoun County, by Mosby's Rangers on Nov. 28, 1864. He was paroled at Aikens Landing, Va. on Feb. 16, 1865.
He was stabbed in an affray with Mason Appell, on Heater's Island on May 31, 1872. Mason died immediately, and Heater died the next day.
