Enlistment Date: July 30, 1942 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

John L. Gudaitis, 85, of Forest City, died Friday morning at home. His wife is the former Elizabeth "Betty" Piatkowski. The couple celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary in June. Born in Forest City, son of the late Stanley and Veronica Witkowski Gudaitis, he was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Forest City, and was a graduate of Forest City High School. He was a World War II veteran, having served as a staff sergeant in the 8th Air Force. During his service, he was a prisoner of war for 19 months. He earned the following medals: European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Air Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Prisoner of War Medal and Overseas Service Bars. He was an active member of American Legion Post 524, Forest City, and served as its commander of 11 years. He was also a deputy commander of the 15th district of the American Legion. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Knights of Lithuania. He was presented with the Legion of Honor Award by the Chapel of Four Chaplains on Oct. 10, 1999. He was also a charter organization executive of Boy Scout Troop 92 and was a supporter of American Legion baseball. Before retirement, he was employed by AT&T Technologies in New Jersey for 40 years, retiring in 1980. Also surviving are two daughters, Kara Remington, Mesa, Ariz.; and Patricia Gudaitis, Belleville, N.J.; a sister, Eva Baron and husband, Alexander, Kirkwood, N.Y.; a brother, Joseph Gudaitis, Johnson City, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. The funeral will be Wednesday from the Jones and Brennan Funeral Home, 430 Main St., Forest City, with Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Forest City. Interment, St. Anthony Cemetery, Forest City.
