Bushrod Washington Skillman was born in 1820 in Loudoun Co., VA. In 1860 he was a farmer in Mt. Gilead, Loudoun Co., VA. He died on 27 June 1862 at the age of 42 killed in action at the battle of Gaines' Mill, VA. Bushrod served as a Sergeant in the Civil War for the Confederate Army. Killed in the seven days fight before Richmond. "I helped bury him," writes his nephew, Bushrod W. Lynn, of Richmond, Va.

Bushrod Washington Skillman and Sarah Elizabeth Gouchenour were married on 24 September 1844 in Loudoun Co., VA. They appeared in the census in 1860 in Mt. Gilead, Loudoun Co., VA. In the 1860 Census their children are listed as Elizabeth, 14, Angelina, 8, Ellen 6. Sarah Elizabeth Gouchenour, daughter of Jacob Gouchenour and Elizabeth Lisle Anderson, was born on 10 May 1828. She died on 5 January 1916 at the age of 87. Death of Mrs. Skillman -

Mrs. Sarah E. Skillman died at an advanced age yesterday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ella V. Ayers, at Gum Springs, Fairfax county. Mrs. Skillman is survived by two other daughters, Mrs. David Franklin Skillman, of Colonial Beach, Virginia; and Mrs. Samuel J. (Sarah Bushrod Skillman) Veirs, of Washington, D.C. She was buried at Woodlawn Baptist Church in Fairfax, VA.

iii. Alcinda Skillman was born about 1849. She died before 1949.

*Brief service records have Sergeant Bushrod Washington Skillman Company I 8th Regiment Virginia Volunteers. “The name Bushrod W. Skillman appears as a signature to a document dated October 19, 1861, in which he was requested to value a four horse wagon team hired into the service of the Confederate States in the 8th Regiment Virginia Volunteers.” His record has some crossed out information confusing him with a Bernard Skillman, and “enlisted July 13, 1861 at Mount Gielead, Virginia” is also crossed out and a handwritten note says “no rolls prior to that date are on file and no record of date & place of enlistment has been found”.
