Abraham Kilmer was the son of Georg (George) Johannes Kilmer and Anna Margaretha Scheicker. Georg and Anna were born in Germany, perhaps in Hesse-Darmstadt . Georg and Anna were no doubt redemptors. These early settlers had contracts for a certain period of years of labor, which were purchased when their boat arrived in America from England, where many Germans had lived temporarily, before coming to America. The premise was that the money was owed to the English crown for paying passage from Europe to England, support while living there and then, passage to America. This was an enterprise of the English crown to bring Protestants from Europe and to provide materials needed to support the huge Navy gathered from the new rich land of America. When the exact amount was "worked off" as certified by "the company clerk", they were free to go and were given some seed and simple tools as they left. (Sent to me by Ruth Brown Egan, F.A.G # 48552943, with much appreciation)

These recruits were desparate people , leaving almost penniless from their homeland. They were required to sign a paper saying that they were Protestant (as were their new monarchs, William and Mary) to undergird the English choice from Catholicim to Protestant. They were sustained by the crowm in England in immigant camps. Recruits wre sought there for sailing to the colonies in America. All the while, tallies were kept of the monies to be repaid to the crown for sustenece and passages on their ships. Upon ariving in the New World, their service for two or three years were sold to land owners that produced supplies for the Navy. Each day the total debt owed was adjusted by the labor performed value. When they totaled out, they were free to go.
