Arabel M. Smith "Tootie" (Mrs. Wm. Smith), 90, passed away on Jan. 31, 2005, in Harlingen, Texas. Arabel was born on July 31, 1914, to Francis Mose and Louise (Aerts) Goffard on the Goffard Homestead in East De Pere. She graduated from East De Pere High School and on Memorial Day, May 30, 1933, she married William J. "Bill" Smith. Arabel worked for years at The Spot Supper Club and when she was 45 years old and her daughters were raised, she went back to school and got her LPN degree. She worked at St. Vincent Hospital for years and then did private duty nursing.
Arabel is survived by her two daughters, Carol (Elmer "Boots") Bongean, Kaukauna; Judee (Ron) Vanden Busch, McQueeney, Texas; eight grandchildren, Julee (Klair) Kress, Sherwood, Teressa (Randy) Krueger, Sherwood, Cindee (Gregg) Bronstadt, Lake Mills, Bill (Julie) Bongean, Shell Knob, Mo., and Vickee (Bill) King, Kaukauna, Steve (Sadie) Vanden Busch, Alcalde, N.M., Sue O'Brien, Arden, N.C., and Sharon (Richard) Vidaurri, La Vernia, Texas. Arabel was the proud great-grandmother of 17 great-grandchildren and even happier with her nine great-great-grandchildren. She is further survived by two brothers-in-law, Lloyd Pratsch, Green Bay; and Joe Winius, Little Chute; four sisters-in-law, Lillian Mullen and Louise Smith, Kaukauna; Alice Jansen and Virginia (Bob) Gildernick, De Pere; many nieces and nephews and her lifelong friend, Isabel Schumacher.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, in 1987; her parents, a sister, Blanche Pratsch; a brother, Marvin "Bud" Goffard; and by Bill's parents, Arnold and Anna Smith; Bill's brothers, Mike, Joe, Clarence, Harvey and Buddy' and his sisters, Viola and Anna Mae.
The funeral Mass will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 309 Desnoyer St., Kaukauna with Fr. Jack Mullarkey officiating. Friends may call at the church from 12 noon until the time of the Mass. Burial will be in Fort Howard Memorial Park.
"Tootie didn't leave behind a cup that was half full or even half-empty. The cup was drained dry because she lived even minute of her life."
