Peggy J. (Reed) Breighner, of Gettysburg, departed this life on the evening of January 23, 2012, in Hanover.

Born November 12, 1935, in Gettysburg, and a lifelong resident of Adams County, she was the daughter of the late J. Thomas and Ethel LaRue (Rohrbaugh) Reed. She was the wife of the late Ray K. Breighner, who was the former Cumberland Township Chief of police, as well as the Gettysburg Borough police force and chief of the Gettysburg Fire Department, who died July 3, 1978.

Mrs. Breighner was a 1953 graduate of Gettysburg High School and was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Gettysburg.

She worked as the Adams County Clerk of Courts from 1982-2002, she previously worked in the same office as Deputy Clerk of Courts from 1969-1981.

Peggy was a member of the Gettysburg Chapter of Business and Professional Women. She was also very active in the Girl Scouts serving as neighborhood coordinator of the Gettys-Trefoil Neighborhood of the Penn Laurel Girl Scout Council, a trainer of leaders, a troop organizer, and consultant. She was a life member of the Gettysburg Fire Department Auxiliary, where she served as past-president, vice-president and secretary and a member of the State Auxiliary to the Pennsylvania Firemen's Association. Mrs. Breighner was very active in Republican organizations serving as Vice-Chairman of the Adams County Republican Committee, and the Third Vice-President of the Adams County Council of Republican Women. She also has served as past president, secretary, and treasurer of the Women's Council, and past secretary of the Republican Committee. She was a committee person in Cumberland Township and a member of the Daughter's of the American Revolution and the Daughter's of the American Colonist.

She is survived by one son, Ray K. Breighner and wife, Diane, of Hanover; a daughter, Katharine Knouse, of Gettysburg; four grandchildren, Carissa VanDyke and husband Jason, Melissa Greiber and husband Roy, Jedediah Knouse, Jacqueline Knouse; three great-grandchildren, Mason VanDyke, Reese VanDyke, Janiah Knouse; 10 siblings, Joan Gebhart, of Gettysburg, Suzan Boch, of Gettysburg, Joseph Reed, of Galeton, Sally Reed, of Spring Grove, James Reed, of Gettysburg, Patricia Gardner, of New Oxford, Sandra Angell, of Gettysburg, Betty Baker, of Gettysburg, Jay Reed, of Cambridgeshire, England, John Reed, of Gettysburg; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Reed.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. January 27, 2012, at St. James Lutheran Church, Gettysburg, with the Rev. Michael Allwein officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg.
