I think it is fascinating that for every person who knows about the assault on Senator Sumner by Congressman Brooks, most don't remember your death at the hands of Chief Justice Terry of the California Supreme Court. You were the last majorpolitical or social figure of stature who was killed in a duel, and over the subject of slavery. But for all who recall Alexander Hamilton, or Stephen Decatur, or even Button Gwinnett, few remember Senator Broderick. This is unfair - a New York born politician you rose through political savvy to being one of the two senators from California with his rival William Gwin, who was a Southerner. The struggle between Broderick and Gwin over the position of California in the 1850s towards slavery was a major subject of the day. A good study of it is Arthur Quinn's THE RIVALS: WILLIAM GWIN, DAVID BRODERICK, AND THE BIRTH OF CALIFORNIA (New York: Crown Publishers - Library of the American West, 1994). Both men were destroyed by the fight - Broderick killed, and Gwin tarnished by the killing. But California remained faithful to the Union because of Broderick's sacrifice.Rest in peace Senator.

Another remarkable Irishman. His “murder” so outraged the citizens of the State of California that California turned away from it’s support for the confederate cause and supported the Union side in the Civil War.
Gad Bless David Broderick

While reading through the website I came across your name and bio. I think it is a noble thing you tried to instill in California, not to have slavery. I'm so sorry you were killed by a man, a supreme court justice, who wanted the evils of slavery in that state. Although not many people may know of you, God has always known of your humanity. Rest in peace.
