Walter T. Eisensmith, 73 years old, president of one of Charleston's largest jewelry and optical concerns, and prominent figure in the city's civic and business life, died at his home at 2112 Kanawha street Monday afternoon at 3:15 o'clock. He had been ill of a complication of diseases for a month.
Coming to Charleston from Newport, Ky., more than 35 years ago, Mr. Eisensmith played an important role in the progress of Charleston as a business center as the president of the Lee street jewelry company which bore his name.
Passage of the present-day West Virginia optometry law in 1909 was largely the result of Mr. Eisensmith's efforts, and for many years he was president of the state board of examiners in optometry. He was president of the Eisensmith Jewelry company and the Eisensmith Optical company which are located at 809 Lee street.
Mr. Eisensmith was a 33rd degree Mason and was active in Charleston Masonic bodies. A former secretary of the Scottish Rite bodies of that fraternity, he was a member of Beni Kedem temple of the Shrine and a Knight Templar. He was a member and trustee of Christ Methodist church.
Funeral Services will be conducted at Christ Methodist church, Quarrier and Morris streets, Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock with the pastor, Rev. J. C. Hoffman, officiating. Interment will take place in Sunset Memorial Park with the Simpson mortuary in charge.
The body will lie in state at the church for an hour before the funeral.
The son of German immigrants, who came to America early in their lives, Walter Theodore Eisensmith was born at Newport, Ky., April 4, 1866. He was educated in the public schools and the Y.M.C.A. night school in Newport. Entering the optical business in 1882, he graduated from the Detroit College of Optics six years later.
Mr. Eisensmith organized the Kentucky State Optical association in 1899, while associated with his brother, L. C. Eisensmith, in the optial business in Newport. He came to Charleston and entered business in 1905.
He was married to Miss Emma Rothweiler of Newport, May 8, 1889. Surviving are Mrs. Eisensmith; two daughters, Mrs. Eunice E. Davis and Mrs. Richard McKee, both of Charleston; two brothers, L. C. Eisensmith of Ft. Thomas, Ky., and Charles F. Eisensmith of Tulsa, Okla.; two grandsons, a granddaughter, a great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.
