Your portrait hangs on my office wall--just in the last few minutes, I have told a couple of young soldiers your story--they may visit The Crater & Blandford. It is an honor to tell young troops about a great man. I know you took some grief after the war because, as a Republican, you supported voting rights for blacks. You were far ahead of your time. Still, even those who criticized your politics had to admit your courage & skill when the bullets were flying. Thank you for your devoted service to Nation & State before, during, & after the war. Deo Vindice, Sir.

General, I have visited the Crater several times and have thought about your bravery. I understand you wanted to be buried with the brave men you fought with--how very noble. I disagree with the cause you fought for but can't help but highly respect you for your devotion to it. Rest in peace
