Civil War Veteran Co G 38th Iowa Infantry "The Martyr Regiment" ------ From military records: Dayton, Reuben. Age 29. Residence Clermont,Iowa, nativity Ohio. Enlisted Aug. 14, 1862. Mustered Sept. 9, 1862. Discharged for disability April 1, 1863, New Madrid, Mo. ----- His brother Jonathan also enlisted into Co G 38th Iowa Infantry. Jonathan mustered out in 1865 in Houston,Tx. ------ The 38th Iowa was nicknamed the Martyr Regiment because over a third of its number died of disease in Louisiana & Mississippi in the latter months of 1863 shortly after the Siege of Vicksburg.Others were discharged disabled and died on the trip home or soon after. There were so few able bodied men left that the 38th Iowa was combined with the 34th Iowa Infantry.
