"Sure on this shining night Of starmade shadows round, Kindness must watch for me This side the ground!" is your most soul lifting melody, doing Agee's poem ethereal justice. May Peace & Joy surround you, & may Gian Carlo embrace you anew!

Sir, I first came to know your "Adagio for Strings" by watching the movie THE ELEPHANT MAN. Thank you for allowing the piece to be put to such inspired and inspiring use in the final scene of that great, great film. God bless you.

Mr. Barber,
This is the rest of the story.
Barrett sang the songs during her student recital Jan. 13 at the Fine Arts Center Recital Hall at Northeastern. The two songs, which finally got to be heard a generation or two later, are appropriately named: "An Old Song" and "Thy Will Be Done".

The songs were written in 1922, when Barber would have been 11 or 12 years old.

"The audience was as receptive as I could have hoped. I'm hopeful his music will get the exposure it deserves from other singers."

What a guy! Rest in peace.

Mr. Barber,
This just in from Romeoville, Illinois.
Jennifer Barrett of Romeoville is the Indiana Jones of the music world. She found two original compositions by American composer Samuel Barber in a forgotten cardboard box dusty with age in a historical society's archives.

"I was rummaging through a box of stuff sheet music with notations written in the margins, old photos, stuff just thrown into an old box. But then I looked again, and then again. Here were musical compositions written by Barber ... and it was electrifying."

How wonderful for you that the once lost can now be heard. Rest in peace.
