Civil War Union Army Soldier. He was 22 years old when he enlisted in as a Private in Company E, 84th New York Volunteer Infantry (also known as the "14th Brooklyn Volunteers"). Mustered in on May 23, 1861, he eventually received a promotion to Sergeant. He was in action with his regiment on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1, 1863), where he was wounded as his unit attacked the Railroad Cut on the west side of the town. He lingered for a few weeks, dying of his wounds on July 18, 1863. He was buried in his family's plot in Brooklyn on September 3, 1863.
