James Richard Hailey was born in Texas to Melton Brown Hailey and Mary Elizabeth Attaway. His mother taught him to read from the Bible. He was married three times, the first to Martha Culyer, who died quite young, next to Sarah Elizabeth Taylor, and late in life to Eleanor Baker Anderson. He is buried in Ogden next to Sarah Elizabeth. He had one child, Annie May Hailey.
Jim was a baggageman on the railroad and quite well-traveled. When his daughter Annie was young she began collecting penny postcards. Jim accommodated her, or indulged her, by sending her cards from many of the stops he made along the way while riding the rails. She had hundreds of cards from her Daddy.
Jim's younger brother Tom married Jim's wife Lizzie's daughter, Jennie Taylor. They all met in Waco, Texas around the turn of the century.
