FORT BELVOIR, Va. — Matthew Bittner, 47, passed peacefully, unvanquished in spirit on Monday, Dec. 12, 2011 at Halquist Memorial Inpatient Center, Arlington, Va.

Born Oct. 5, 1964 in Cumberland, to Kenneth E. Bittner and the late Ruth (Porter) Bittner.

Matthew was a graduate of Beall High School, class of 1982; he graduated from Frostburg State College and University of Maryland with a Masters in Kinesiology. He was employed by the Montgomery County Schools as a Health and Physical Education Teacher at Lakelands Park Middle School. He was a member of the Cumberland Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Matthew performed seven years with, "It Is Written" a musical ministry, recording several CD's and also performed in the Washington National Opera. A fan of all sports, Matt was an avid amateur softball player.

Surviving are his father, Kenneth Bittner, Eckhart; his life partner, Commander U.S. Navy Retired, Greg Barringer; one brother, Mark Bittner and wife Patti, Eckhart; two sisters, Sharon Cutter and husband Larry, Eckhart and Faith Ann Leasure and husband Brian, Eckhart; eight nieces and nephews, Tonia Collins, Bud Cutter, Toby Cutter, Blaine Leasure, Lindsay Leasure, Joshua Bittner, Justin Bittner and Jacob Bittner; two great-nieces and one great-nephew.

Family and friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Friday, Dec. 16, 2011 from 3 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011 at 1 p.m. at the Frostburg Methodist Church with the Pastor Richard Hall officiating.

Interment will be in the Eckhart Cemetery.

There will be a "Celebration of Life" held in Gaithersburg in the New Year.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to help fight cancer be directed to Lakelands Park Middle School, c/o Matthew Bittner Fund, 1200 Main St., Gaithersburg, MD 20878.
