Born Jan. 30, 1934, in Carroll County, he was the son of the late Joseph and Madeline Abell. He was the husband of Janice Mary Abell, his wife of 33 years, who died Dec. 29, 2004.
He was employed with the Carroll County Road Department as a heavy equipment operator and had retired after 29 years of service. He enjoyed working around his home, splitting firewood and walking the family dog. He attended Sams Creek Church of the Brethren.
Surviving are daughters Judy Ledford and husband Richard, of North Carolina, Susan Abell, of Virginia, and Sandra Koontz and husband Wayne, of Westminster; son John Abell and wife Heather, of Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until the time of service, 7 p.m. today at the Jeffrey N. Zumbrun Funeral Home and Monument Company, 6028 Sykesville Road, Eldersburg, with the Rev. Paul Leatherman officiating. Internment will be at a later date in the Sams Creek Church Cemetery
