Body of Auto Plunge Victim Found in River
MADISON, March 31 (Special)—Firemen recovered early today the body of a partly paralyzed man who was killed when his hand controlled car plunged into Coal River. Cpl. J. W. Flowers, head of the Madison state police detachment, identified the victim as Carl Dotson, 39, of Alkol, Lincoln County.
The Officer said Dotson and two companions—Emory Weddington, 40, of Alkol, and George Clay, 27, of Morrisvale, Boone County were in the car when it went out of control on W. Va. 3, eight miles west of Madison, about 8 p. m. Saturday.
Weddington, the driver, told the policeman that Dotson was sitting beside him in the front seat. Dotson said he wanted to drive, Weddington continued, and before he could stop the car, Dotson grabbed the wheel. Weddington said the vehicle swerved suddenly and went into the river. Neither Weddington nor Lewis was hurt seriously.
A World War II veteran, Dotson apparently drowned. His body was found by members of the Madison Volunteer Fire Department, about four hours after the accident. It was on a shoal some 400 yards from where the car went into the river. Attendants at Hunter and Hunter mortuary said Dotson, a former utility linesman, fell from a pole about two years ago, and injuries from the accident left him paralyzed from the waist down.
He and his companions were in his car which had been fitted with hand controls so that he could drive. Cpl. Flowers said the men had been in a tavern and had driven only about half a mile when the accident occurred. "So far as I can tell right now," he said, "there won't be any charges against Weddington."
Dotson is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jess Dotson of Bulger, Lincoln County; three brothers, Kisby of Charleston, Carrol Gene of Cleveland, Ohio, and Jimmy Dotson, at home; and two sisters, Mrs. Kathleen Hager and Mrs. Joyce Stevens, both of Charleston.
Service will be at 2 p. m. tomorrow at Left Fork Baptist Church at Bulger with Revs. Woodrow Lawson and Jock Harless officiating. Burial will be in Brumfield Cemetery at Bear Branch. The body was taken from the mortuary to the home today.
