MARION, Va. Billy Joe "BJ" Atwood, age 80, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011, at the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. He was born in Troutdale, Va. to the late James T. and Okie P. Atwood and was preceded in death by his wife, Jean H. Atwood and an infant son, James Paul Atwood. He was a member of the Troutdale Baptist Church. He was a retired Virginia State Police Sergeant with 31 years of service, a charter member of the Virginia State Police Association and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a life member of the Francis Marion V.F.W. Post No. 4667. BJ was proud and honored to be a member of the Virginia State Police. He treated everyone the same and stood for what he thought was right and never compromised his beliefs for anyone. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and John Hunter, Hermitage, Tenn. and Teresa and Keith Mitchell, Brownsburg, Ind.; one brother and sister-in-law, William H. and Noni Atwood, Marion; one sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Jack Rutherford, McDonough, Ga.; and nine grandchildren. A visitation period will be held on Saturday Dec. 3, 2011, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Bradley's Funeral Home in Marion with graveside services to follow at the Troutdale Cemetery with First Sergeant Mike Honaker officiating. Honors will be rendered by the Virginia State Police Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Troutdale Cemetery Fund, C/O Anita McGrady, P.O.
