Born the middle of three children, her father had graduated from Harvard Law School and practiced law locally. From an early age, she wanted to be an author. She attended classes at Harvard. During World War I, she began to teach first grade and remained a teacher for 32 years, yet continued to write after retiring from teaching. She never married.
