Author. She was a 20th-century American author, mainly of children's books. Starting with the first in 1924, her most famous writings were the series of books called "The Boxcar Children." She wrote nineteen books in her series, with the last in 1976. By the 21st century, the publishers had hired more authors to add to the series totaling 160 or more books. In April 2014, the animated film "The Boxcar Children" was released. Besides the Boxcar series, she authored another 15 other books for both children and adults. Born the middle of three children, her father had graduated from Harvard Law School and practiced law locally. From an early age, she wanted to be an author. She attended classes at Harvard. During World War I, she began to teach first grade and remained a teacher for 32 years, yet continued to write after retiring from teaching. She never married.
