Son of David and Rebecca Hunt Buttrick of Concord, Massachusetts. He helped his father on the farm.
He had enlisted in April 1861, serving in Co. G, 5th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, as part of the three months call-up.
He later became a private in Co. B. 32nd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted and mustered on November 28, 1861. He was wounded at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863, his leg amputated above the knee; due to the excessively hot weather, gangrene set in and he died July 28, 1863. He was buried Aug. 6, 1863.
