Crimean War Victoria Cross War Medal Recipient. He served as a Seaman on the gunboat HMS Beagle, Royal Navy. On July 3, 1855, his ship had orders to burn, sink and destroy everything of value to the enemy at the Genitchi Strait, Sea of Azov. Seaman Trewavas was sent in a 4-oared gig party to destroy a bridge, at a Russian shore position. As the gig ground against the bridge, Seaman Trewavas leapt out with an axe and began to cut away at the hawsers holding the pontoons together. Although under enemy heavy fire and wounded, he continued until his task was completed, destroying bridge post. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross War Medal by Queen Victoria in June 1857.
