Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He volunteered at the very beginning of the war and served in a number of commands. First appointed on October 6, 1862 as Major of the 4th New York Volunteer Heavy Artillery, he was tabbed to serve on the staff of his older brother, Major General Abner Doubleday. On September 14, 1863 he was commissioned as Lieutenant Colonel of the 3rd United States Colored Infantry, serving with them for a year until he was promoted to Colonel and commander of the 45th United States Colored Troops on October 5, 1864. Brevetted Brigadier General, USV on March 13, 1865 for "meritorious service", he was honorably mustered out after four years of service on September 12, 1865. After the war he became a successful stockbroker in New York City, New York.
