Mississippi Governor, U.S. Senator. Moving to Mississippi, he studied law, was admitted the bar, practiced law in Greenwood, Mississippi and was editor if the Greenwood Commonwealth. Entering politics, he served in the Mississippi House of Representatives (1890-96). During the Spanish-American War, he served as a Major in U.S. Army. After the war, he resumed the practice of law and was elected as a Democrat the 36th Mississippi Governor, serving 1904-08. After his term, he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate, serving 1913-19. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he edited a newspaper in Jackson Mississippi and later retired to Birmingham, Alabama, until his death.
