U.S. Congresswoman. She graduated from Muskegon Business College in 1905, became a lawyer in private practice, was registrar of probate court of Muskegon County and judge of probate, Muskegon County, (1925-37). She was a member of the Michigan State House of Representatives (1939-41), on the Social Security Board, Washington, D.C., (1941-42), on the staff for US Labor Department in 1942, in the US Adjutant General’s Office (1942-46) and a member on the board of the Michigan State Prison Commission for Women. During World War II, she worked as a civilian employee for the US Army in Washington D.C. and in Europe. In 1951, she was elected as a Republican to the Eighty-second Congress and to the next two succeeding Congresses, serving until 1956. She was the first woman to represent Michigan in Congress and the first woman to serve on the House Judiciary Committee. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, she retired from public service.
