U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1812 and commenced to practice law in Richmond, Kentucky. During the War of 1812, he enlisted in the US Army and served as a Colonel aide-de-camp to General William Henry Harrison, who was later President of the United States. After the war, he was a member of the Kentucky State House of Representatives in 1819, was elected as a Republican to the Seventeenth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of George Robertson, serving (1821-23). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was again a member of the Kentucky State House of Representatives (1827, 1830, 1839, 1841, 1845), US District Attorney for Kentucky (1828-32) and a member of the Kentucky State Senate, (1846-50).
