U.S. Congressman. With the advent in the Seminole War, he left his academic courses and served as a Private in the U.S. Army. After leaving the military, he returned to Tennessee and engaged in agricultural pursuits. He was clerk of the circuit court of Bedford County (1852-60) and served as a Colonel in the Tennessee State Militia, before the Civil War. In addition, he was editor of the Shelbyville Tennessee, newspaper and clerk and master of the chancery court (1865-69). In 1869, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-first Congress, serving until 1871. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his farming interests until his death.
