Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He was serving as a Major in the 4th Kentucky Cavalry, near Wetumpka, Alabama, on April 13, 1865, when he earned the Medal of Honor. He then encountered and defeated the enemy, and on reaching Wetumpka found the steamers anchored in midstream. By a ruse obtained possession of a boat, with which he reached the steamers and demanded and received their surrender. The Medal of Honor was awarded on April 9, 1898. He later served as Commissary General of the Army, reaching the rank of Major General.
