U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Harvard College with a medical degree in 1766, and afterward practiced medicine in Taunton, Massachusetts. He was a member of the Provincial Congress, in 1775. During the Revolutionary War, he served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Continental Army, was an aide-de-camp to General George Washington and appointed a Major General of Militia, in 1786. After the war, he was judge of the Bristol County court of common pleas, (1784-96) and a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, (1789-93). In 1793, he was elected as a Pro-Administration candidate to the Third Congress, serving until 1795. After his term, he was a member of the Massachusetts State Senate, (1801-05) and Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts, in 1809. He also was a member of the Board of Military Defense in 1812 and chief justice of the Hancock County court of common pleas. In 1976, he was honored by being on a postage stamp for the U.S. Postal Service.
