Ellen Marie Bowman, 90, of Ontario, CA., passed away on Friday, October 14, 2011 of congestive heart failure. She died peacefully at home, surrounded by family. Those who knew her know that words cannot express what a remarkable lady she was. She was beautiful and classy in every way. Ellen was born on May 1, 1921 in Turney, Missouri to Harry and Pearl Jackson. She had a younger brother, Otis, whom she adored. She loved books and music. She was an accomplished pianist and organist and she loved to sing (she had a beautiful alto voice). And who could forget her love of roses? At age 11, her family was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She remained faithful and active in the church all her life, devoting many years of service to others by sharing her musical talents on piano and organ, singing in choirs, teaching and leading both youth and adults, and gladly serving and helping others in need. She served as an ordinance worker in the Los Angeles and Redlands temples. She also enjoyed genealogy research. She graduated from Junior College with degrees in Business and English, then attended the University of Kansas City. At times in her life, she worked for a registrar's office of a university, a stock brokerage firm, a bank, Armstrong Nurseries and Uber Advertising. Her greatest joy was her family. She fell in love with John Bowman and they married on June 4, 1941 in Kansas City and were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple in September of 1943. After living in various cities in Missouri, Oklahoma and California, she and John settled in Ontario. They had 7 beautiful children on whom she showered her love, affection and care. She continued to shower that love onto her growing family. Ellen is preceded in death by her husband, John Hyrum Bowman; her parents, Harry and Pearl Jackson; her brother Otis Jackson; her step-mother Faye Jackson. She leaves behind 7 children (14 actually, since she loved her in-law children as her own); John (Johnene) Bowman of Carlsbad, CA; David (Lynda) Bowman of Westlake Village, CA; Nancy (Jack) Buchanan of Salt Lake City, UT; Douglas Keith (Jeri) Bowman of West Jordan, UT; Greg (Celine) Bowman of Las Vegas, NV; Ron (Christie) Bowman of Mentone, CA; Melissa (Ray) Homan of Ontario, CA. She also leaves behind 31 grand children (Joanna Woods; Julie, Andy and Marci Bowman; Jenny Walker; Scott and Steven Bowman; Jana Kalinowski; Lauri Lewis; Jennifer Johnson; David Buchanan; Mary Bayles; Susan Loveless; John Buchanan; Joshua Bowman; Kelly Springer; David Bowman; Brittany Petty; Kevin Bowman; Laura Forman; Emily Black; Bryan Bowman; Melissa and Brandon Bowman; Jennifer, Kimberly, Ashley, Madison and Danika Bowman; Nicholas and Heather Homan.) Ellen also has 45 great grand children and countless friends. Services will be on Wednesday, October 19, at at the LDS Rosewood Chapel on the corner of 4th Street and Campus Avenue in Ontario. The viewing will begin at 10:00 am. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 am. A graveside ceremony will take place on Friday, October 21, at the Salt Lake City Cemetery in Utah at 10:00 am. Ellen will be interred next to her beloved husband, John. Funeral arrangements are being taken care of by Richard Peterson Funeral Home, 123 W. 'G' St., Ontario, CA, 91762. Special thanks to Ellen's daughters Nancy and Melissa, who cared for Mom day and night in her final weeks, and never left her alone. A heartfelt thank you from our family to all of you who have been part of Ellen's life. She had a full life, a good life, and those of us who were blessed to know her and be loved by her should feel nothing but joy for her, as we trust and believe she has gone home to our Lord and Savior and is reunited with loved ones who have gone before.
