Shelley died while scuba diving with her husband, David Swain. They were in Tortola, British Virgin Islands between Cooper and Salt islands. The dive was called the "Twin Tugs."
Initially her death was ruled accidental, then changed to homicide. Her mask was broken, and appeared to have fought for her life.
In October 2009 David Swain was found guilty of murder, and was serving time in prison in the British Virgin Islands. In October 2011 the decision was reversed.
She worked as a Middle School Principal at Thayer Academy in Braintree, Massachusetts. She lived in Jamestown, Rhode Island.
