Cotton was born in Tennessee but, he lived in Michigan for many years. He was married to a Canadian lady - Evelyn Franklin until her passing. Two children; Duane Franklin (Florida) and Peggy (Moody) - Michigan.

Cotton lived the later part of his life in Cleveland, Tennessee with his brother Fred. He passed away at the age of 86.
