Charles Wesley Bruner, 95 of Downing, Missouri passed away Monday, October 10, 2011 at the University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri after suffering a stroke on October 1, 2011.
The son of Robert Franklin and Ivalee (Drake) Bruner, he was born on April 10, 1916 in rural Schuyler County, Missouri. He was united in marriage to Margaret Eleanor Middleton on March 16, 1946 in Lancaster, Missouri and to this union four children were born.
Charles served in the United States Army from 1941 to 1945, first in the Horse Cavalry and later in the 11th Armored Infantry Division. During the Battle of the Bulge, he was twice wounded and received the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. He told a buddy in the cold, wet trenches, "If I get out of this, I'll never complain about anything again!" and as far as we know, he kept his word!
He and Margaret made many trips across the United States of America to attend Company B reunions and visit with his old Army buddies. One special day for Charles was when he and his two surviving brothers made the Honor Flight to Washington D. C. to visit the World War II Memorial and to meet former Senator Bob Dole.
Charles was an avid horseman and until recently rode his spotted Foxtrotter "Buddy" regularly. He was the Manager of the MFA in Downing for 33 years and enjoyed driving around the countryside looking at the crops until suffering his stroke.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Downing, Missouri as well as two sons, Charles Michael Bruner and wife, Denise of Trenton, Missouri and James Leo and wife, Terri of Downing, Missouri; two daughters, Susan Jane Burgher and husband, Bruce of Moulton, Iowa and Sara Jo "Jodie" York and significant other, Steve Racey of Lancaster, Missouri; five grandchildren, Caleb Cornett and wife, Debbie of Chicago, Illinois, Troy Bruner and Travis Bruner of Trenton, Missouri, Alex Bruner and Drew Bruner of Downing, Missouri; 2 step-grandchildren, Shane Burgher and wife, Erica of Moravia, Iowa and Beau Burgher and wife, Alicia of Moulton, Iowa; 8 step-great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Robert Bruner of Downing, Missouri and Max Bruner and wife, Janet of Memphis, Missouri; 2 sisters, Ardelle Dellinger of Greenfield, Iowa and Doris Ketchum of Downing, Missouri along with several dozen nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Wilma Bruner in infancy and Leola Comstock and one brother, Oren Bruner.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Schuyler County Church of Faith in Lancaster, Missouri with pastor, Sonny Smyser officiating. Music will be special CD selections of "In The Garden" and "Amazing Grace". Visitation will be held one hour prior to the memorial services at 10:00 a.m. at the Schuyler County Church of Faith. Memorials have been established for the Fabius Cemetery. Burial of the cremains will be at a later date in the Fabius Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Lancaster, Missouri.
