Esther S. Ray, age 90, of Crookston, MN, formerly of rural Bemidji, died Wednesday, September 1, 2004 at the Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home, Crookston. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 7, 2004 at the United Methodist Church, Bemidji, with Rev. Eric Hucke officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church Tuesday.
Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Northern Township, Beltrami County, Minnesota, under the direction of the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji.
Esther Selma Moe was born December 26, 1913 to Arne and Selma (Knutson) Moe in Adams, ND. After the death of her biological mother, she was raised by Andrew and Gina Grothe, the only parents she ever knew were. Gina was the older sister of Selma, who died when Esther was eight months old.
Esther was baptized in 1914 in a Lutheran Church in Adams, ND. She grew up first attending Lutheran Church and then a Methodist Church. She graduated from Bemidji High School and attended Bemidji State Teacher's College. She was a life long learner and a strong Christian. She attended Northern Bible Chapel, Bemidji during her younger adult life. She joined the United Methodist Church in 1953. Her is life is characterized by the principles of generosity and caring for others. Whether making quilts for members of the Armed Forces or inviting visitors in for a meal, she appreciated the benefits she had, and sought to give to those who needed help.
Her family was most important in her life. Esther was a strong supporter of her daughters, taking an active part in their school, church, 4-H and music activities. She also helped care for her elderly parents; Saturdays were always spent with "Pop", her aging father. Similarly her grandchildren were a central part of her life. Esther also enjoyed quilt making, crocheting and making afghans for her family members. Her other hobbies included gardening, canning, cooking, baking, sewing and genealogy. She worked with the Community Action Program and partnered in running the family well drilling and cattle businesses.
Esther is survived by her two daughters: Virginia (Gordon) Tolbert, Crookston, and Dorothy (Phil) Bonemeyer, Alamosa, CO; six grandchildren: Scott (Mary) Tolbert, Lisa (Tim) Vind, RaeAnne (Jim) Parks, Cindy Janssen, Diane (Lee) Garduno and Michael (Angie) Bonemeyer; 16 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Esther was preceded in death by her husband Chester Ray; parents Andrew and Gina (Knutson) Grothe; biological parents Arne and Selma (Knutson) Moe; two brothers: John and Howard Grothe; half brother James Moe; four sisters: Sylvia Whiting, Evelyn Watkins, Enga Dillon and Lily Wright.
