US Congressman. During the Civil War he served first as a Private in Company A, 126th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (August 11, 1862 to his muster out on May 20, 1863), then as a Private in Company E, 21st Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry (he was wounded in action in November 1864, and was mustered out soon after). He was elected as a Republican to represent first Pennsylvania's 17th Congressional District, then the 18th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1893 to 1907.
