U.S. Congressman. He attended the U.S. Military Academy, Indiana University, studied law at the U.S. Military Academy, was admitted to the bar in 1842 and commenced to practice law in Bloomington, Indiana. During the Mexican American War, he served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. After the war, he served as judge of the sixth judicial circuit of Indiana (1852-56) and was a professor of law in Indiana University, (1853-56). In 1857, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fifth Congress, serving until 1859. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed by President James Buchanan a judge of the U.S. Court of Claims serving 1860-64, was a member a of the Indiana State House of Representatives (1864-66) and a cotton agent of U.S. Treasury Department (1866-68). After serving as a member of the Indiana Senate (1868-69), he practiced law until his death.
