Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Private in the Union Army in Company K, 4th New York Heavy Artillery. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on April 1, 1865 at White Oak Road, Virginia. His citation reads "Made a hazardous reconnaissance through timber and slashings, preceding the Union line of battle, signaling the troops, and leading them through the obstructions."
