The son of George Crites and Mary (Mygrants), William married Catharine (Moore), and shortly after enlisted in Ohio's 80th Vol. Infantry where he served three years and three months. He narrowly escaped death in the battle at Missionary Ridge, and though suffered three months with typhoid fever in 1862, was never wounded.
When William was discharged, he returned to his occupation as a carpenter and built several homes in Mineral City. His last job was foreman at the building of Dover High School which was completed in 1917. The following year he suffered a stroke that paralyzed both his legs and he was confined to a wheelchair. He was Dover's last Civil War surivor and died at the age of 87 years, 2 mos, and 25 days.
