Jesup-Shirla Ione Shaw Pinder died September 10, 2008 at her residence after a short illness.
She was born on January 14, 1930, the daughter of Robert Lee Shaw and Martie Ione Morris Shaw in Orlando, Florida. Her early education took place in Winter Park, Florida before moving with her parents to Jesup, Georgia at the age of eight. She completed her public school education in Jesup, graduating from Jesup High School in 1947.
During her childhood, she studied voice, violin and piano, and in her senior year of high school she won the Georgia State Championship in vocal solo.
Shirla attended John B. Stetson University majoring in voice, receiving the Bachelor of Music degree in 1951. In college she was active in the Baptist Student Union, the Glee Club, the Travel Squad, the Radio Chorus, and was a soprano soloist all four years. She was a member and officer of Phi Beta Music Fraternity, Alpha Dexioma, and "The Honor" and was chosen for Who's Who.
After graduation she served as music director of Ancient City Baptist Church in St. Augustine, Florida before moving back home and teaching in the public schools of Jesup.
On December 27, 1953 she married Walter Folk Pinder, a USAF student jet fighter pilot. After completing training and military obligations the couple returned to Georgia with their four children, Walter Jr., Susan Dale, Terry Lee and Shirla Gail.
Back in Jesup, Shirla put her musical background to work directing music at First Baptist Church and teaching voice and piano to upwards of thirty pupils per week for the next forty years.
She is survived by her husband, their four children, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends in Georgia and Florida.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the "Finishing with Faith" building program at the First Baptist Church of Jesup, 185 South Brunswick Street, Jesup, GA 31546.
Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6:00-8:00 p. m. at Howard-Jones-Nobles Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 13, 2008 from the Jesup First Baptist Church at 2: 00 p. m. with Dr. Michael VonMoss officiating. Interment will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery.
