Death of I. K. Allen
Isaac Kimberly Allen, 81, a well-known civil war veteran, died about 6 o'clock yesterday morning at his home on Spring street, following a week's illness with ulcer of the stomach. He was born in Wallingford, Ct., June 10,1832,and learned the carpenter's trade while a young man.
He married, May 14, 1854, Adelia E. Stockwell of Dummerston Hill, who died in 1890. He went to Brattleboro two years after his marriage and had lived there since that time. He assisted in the erection of a large number of buildings town and for a time conducted a lumber business on Flat street.
He enlisted September 19, 1861, in Co. F, 4th Vermont regiment, and was awarded the sergeant's stripes for an act of bravery while carrying the surgeon's amputating instruments in the seven days retreat in front of Richmond. While home on a 20-days furlough in 1863, he was taken ill with smallpox so that he was never able to go to the front again.
He joined Columbian lodge of Masons, Fort Dummer chapter, Royal arch Masons, and Beauseant commandery of Knights Templar soon after the war. He held a life membership in the grand Royal Arch chapter of Vermont.
In January,1891, he married Mrs. Belle Hall of Brattleboro, who survives him. He is also survived by one son, Frank Allen of New York, and one daughter, Mrs. Luther Barber of Brattleboro. The funeral will be private at the home tomorrow afternoon. Rev. D.E. Trout will officiate and the burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
