Virginia Acting Governor. After teaching in James City County, Gregory received a law degree from the College of William & Mary in 1830. He represented James City County in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1832 to 1836, and again from 1839 to 1841, before resigning to become a member of the Virginia Council of State. As a member of the Council, Gregory served as lieutenant governor, and succeeded John Rutherfoord as Acting Governor on 31 March 1842. He held that position until James McDowell was elected by the state legislature and took office in January 1843.
In 1853, Gregory was appointed United States District Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, serving in that position until 1860. He thereafter served as a judge for the Sixth Judicial Circuit of Virginia, and later as the Commonwealth's Attorney for Charles City County, before his retirement in 1880.
