John Cantius Garand

Because this great French-Canadian came to our assistance and gave us a rifle to beat all others of the day, we prevailed against evil where boots were on the ground and bullets flew at our men as fast as the enemy could fire them. Never underestimate the tactical advantage of an instant second shot against an enemy soldier firing a bolt action rifle. No, it wasn't the only thing that won the war, but it made the biggest difference on the front lines, and we have John Cantius Garand to thank for that. Je vous remercie, et une nation reconnaissante vous remercie. Repose en paix.

My Grandmother Mae was a barrel inspector on the M-1 line at the Springfield Armory during the Second World War.I used to volunteer at the SA Museum NHS during my teen years; got to hold Garand #1, still gives me thrill to think about it.

Still the most effective battle rifle of all time.Awesome in its simplicity and amazing in its long range accuracy. Comforting in its reliability under adversity. And, it had a bayonet lug that was not just a decoration.
