U.S. Congressman. He completed preparatory studies, studied medicine and began a medical practice as a physician in Gardiner, Maine. In addition to being a doctor, he was an inventor and received a patent for an improved process for making brick and tile. Entering politics, he was a member of the Massachusetts State Senate (1811-12). In 1813, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirteenth Congress, serving until 1815 and reelected to the Sixteenth Congress, serving (1819-21). After leaving Congress, he resumed the practice of medicine until his death.
