U.S. Congressman. He attended Kingston Academy, graduated from Princeton College in 1810, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1814 and commenced to practice law in Ithaca, New York. He was Ithaca justice of the peace in 1817, first surrogate of Tompkins County, (1817-21), a member of the New York State Assembly in 1818, appointed trustee of Ithaca in 1821 and was president of Ithaca in 1822. In addition, he was Tompkins County supervisor in 1825, treasurer of Ithaca, (1826-28), judge of the court of common pleas, (1826-36) and served as a director of the Ithaca & Owego Railroad. In 1837, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth Congress and served until his death at age 37.
