Charles R. Alires, age 83, of Grand Junction, Colorado since 1988, formerly of Leadville, Colorado, passed away August 25, 2011 in Grand Junction.

He was born June 16, 1928, to Eloy and Eloisa Alires, in Center, Colorado. He married his wife, Toni on June 20, 2009 in Grand Junction.

Charles served in the United States Army during World War II. He received his basic training in the United States and afterwards was stationed in Okinawa where he attained the rank of Sergeant. He was awarded numerous commendations.

Charles worked in the mines in Butte, Montana for four years and worked at Climax Mine in Leadville for 25 years. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge and Veterans of Foreign Wars and received several awards as a volunteer at the Catholic Outreach and Soup Kitchen where he was also named an ambassador. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and storytelling.

Charles is survived by his wife, Toni Alires; grandchildren, Randy and wife, Ashley Alires and Steven Alires; great-granddaughter, Angelina Alires; brothers, Andy and wife, Viola Alires; Gilbert and wife, Josephine Alires; Robert Alires; Felix Alires; Arthur and wife, Frances Alires; Max and wife, Vi Alires, and Dennis Alires; sisters, Clo Gallegos; Evelin Petitt; Margaret Cardona; Mary and husband, Dennis Baker; Gloria and husband, Gilbert Trujillo, and Dorothy Alires; brother-in-law, Howard Dohrman; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, Ruben; sons, Carl and Randy; parents; brothers, Alex and Herman; sister, Verna; and his first wife, Minnie.

Visitation was held Sunday, August 28, 2011 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Leadville from 3 - 6:00 p.m. A Rosary Service followed at 6:00 p.m with Deacon Tony Werckman officiating. A Mass of Christian burial was held Monday, August 29, 2011 at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m., with Reverend Father Steve Parlet as Celebrant.

Burial was at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Leadville, with a reception following at Leadville Elks Lodge #236.

Bailey-Kent Funeral Home of Leadville assisted the family with arrangements.
