Mrs. Seleda Clarette James, the seventh child of nine children was born May 8, 1909, to the late Mr. Berry James and Mrs. Olive Randall James in the Mount Olive Community in Holmes County, Lexington, Mississippi. Following a brief illness, she departed this life on Wednesday, October 4, 1989, at the Methodist Hospital of Middle Mississippi, Lexington, Mississippi.
Mrs. James received her elementary education in the public schools of Holmes County at Mount Olive, and completed her high school education at Ambrose Vocational High School. Realizing the need for peace in her life--that peace that passeth all understanding--she confessed her hope in Christ and joined the Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Reverend H. L. Young.
She was united in holy matrimony to the late Mr. Theodore Harris.
In search of a career for life, she moved to Chicago, Illinois, and entered the Poro Beauty Culture School and became a certified, licensed cosmetologist in 1939. Upon returning to Lexington, she united with the Asia Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend R. B. Gayden.
For approximately fifty years, Mrs. James served her church and community well in the following capacities: a choir member, Superintendent of the Young's People Sunday School Department; Assistant Sunday School Superintendent for 13 years; Baptist Training Union Director; Daily Vacation Bible School Director; and in 1962, she assumed the position as General Superintendent of the Sunday School and served faithfully for 27 years. Mrs. James was a devout student of the Holy Scriptures and instructed Sunday School teachers on "How to Prepare to Teacher the Sunday School Lessons".
She also served as Dean of the Lebanon District Sunday School and Baptist Training Union Congress; a member of the Lebanon District Women's Convention; a member of the R. C. Lee Federated Club; and for many years, Mrs. James attended the State and National Sunday School and Baptist Training Union Congress.
Being a people-centered individual, her life-long career included the following occupations: owner-operator of a Beauty Salon, a teacher in the Holmes County Public School System and Saints Industrial College; Headstart Director and Migrant Farmers teacher at Saint Industrial College. She joined the staff of Central Mississippi, Inc. and served as Director of the Senior Citizens Nutrition Center, Lexington Site. She retired June 30 1989, after several years of dedicated service. With all of her responsibilities, Mrs. James found the time to call, visit, and pray for the sick and shut-in, and she served as a hospital volunteer.
Mrs. James leaves to cherish loving memories: three sons, Mr. Simon Harris, Lexington, MS, Reverend Vernon B. Harris, Chicago, IL and Mr. I. H. Montgomery, II, Jackson, MS; three brothers, Mr. Hilary James, Columbus, OH, Mr. David James and Mr. Edward James, both of Chicago, IL; two sisters, Mrs. Rosie Mae Redditt, Lake Village, AK and Mrs. Sophronia M. Moses, Lexington, MS; fifteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Lillian Harris, Chicago, IL and Mrs. Carol Montgomery, Jackson, MS; one brother-in-law, Mr. Archie L. Moses, Lexington, MS; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Willie James, Chicago, IL, a dear cousin and friend, Mrs. Hattie J. Brown, Lexington, MS; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and a legion of friends.
Funeral Services were held from the sanctuary of the historic Asia Missionary Baptist Church on Tuesday, October 10, 1989, at 12:00 Noon, with the Reverend C. D. Wilson, Pastor-Officiant, Mrs. Annie L. Saffold, Mistress of Ceremonies and Miss Ora C. Redd, Pianist.
