Jacob, along with his brothers, Benjamin and Lewis, all enlisted on Aug 14th 1862, to serve in the Civil War with the 116th Ohio Volunteer Infantry,Co A. On June 11th 1863, while in the area of Winchester, Va, Lewis became ill with the fever and died that same day of Typhoid.. 5 days later Benjamin and Jacob were both down with the fever (maybe Typhoid) when the hospital was overrun by the Confederates and they were taken prisoner to Richmond, Va. Benjamin remained at Libby prison in Richmond for 10 days and was released to the Union side to be treated in Maryland for lack of medicine's in the South. Jacob ended up a prisoner for 18 days at Shenandoah and was then released for medical treatment in the North. The 116th was in the area of Appomattox Court House the day General Lee surrendered to General Grant. They both were mustered out of the army on June 14, 1865, and immediately set out on their return home to Ohio.
