Rose A. Hughes, 89, of 2993 Deerwood Circle, Dubuque, passed away Monday, Aug. 8, 2011, at home with her family by her side.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Tauke officiating. Burial will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Scales Mound, Ill. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at Hoffmann-Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Friends also may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Rose was born on Oct. 20, 1921, in Wichita, Kan., daughter of William and Anna (Summers) Underwood. She grew up in Ryan, Iowa. Rose graduated from Clarke College in 1943 and went on to earn her degree in library science.

She married Vernon Hughes on Oct. 20, 1945, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Dubuque; he preceded her in death on Jan. 7, 1960.

Rose taught high school English and directed plays while living in Scales Mound. In 1965, she and her family moved to Dubuque, where she was a librarian at Dubuque Senior High School from 1966 until her retirement in 1986.

Rose was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, serving on the liturgy committee, rosary society and St. Anthony Volunteers, R.C.I.A., Emmaus and as a lector. She also was involved in the Lay Ministry Formation Program of the Archdiocese of Dubuque. She was a member of St. Elizabeth's Catholic Mothers' Study Club and Delta Kappa Gamma. In 1990, she was inducted into the Loras Players Hall of Fame.

Rose enjoyed traveling, reading, theater and being involved in her parish. She loved cooking for family and friends and devoted herself to them. She was cherished as Mom, Nana, Great-Nana Rose and friend.

Those left to honor her memory are her children, Veronica Ann (Michael) Larkin, of Dubuque, Mary Carol Hughes, of Evanston, Ill., Colleen Rose (Donald Rothschild) Hughes, of River Forest, Ill., and Kenneth Martin (Ellen Kemper) Hughes, of Santa Fe, N.M.; seven grandchildren, Brian Larkin, of Dubuque, Lisa (Lou) Thomas, of St. Paul, Minn., Jeremy Rothschild, of Chicago, Emily and Jessica Rothschild, both of New York City, Mia Chavez, of Boulder, Colo., and Chris Chavez, of Santa Fe; three great-grandchildren, Sophia, Josie and Genevieve Thomas; and five nieces and nephews, Larry (Diane) Hughes, Richard (Margie) Hughes, Ann Schoenhard, Martin (Candy) Underwood and Deb (Vince) Agro.

She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Wilton and Martin.
