John Welder Cliburn passed away on July 25, 2011. He was 63 years old. John was born on February 6, 1948, to Robert Earl and Lela Welder Cliburn and raised in Victoria. He graduated from Victoria High School in 1966, attended Victoria College, and served in the National Guard.

From early on, John had a love of the water and the land. He was a land steward, cowboy, road boss king and a shrimp boat captain. Additionally, John was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, was a Deputy Game Warden, served on the Private Land Advisory Board for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and was a director of the Texas Wildlife Association . He was passionate about his family's heritage especially Jay Welder, his Grandfather whom he never knew. John loved to reminiscence about family history with great stories. No one ever forgot a first meeting with John. His wit and his own humorous way with words left people always wanting more. There were always "good times" around JC. He had a "unique" way with words that was like none other.He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert Charles Cliburn; and sister, Diana Cliburn Leinen. John was also preceded in death by his faithful four-legged friend, his dog Khaki.

John is survived by his wife, Tracy Post Cliburn; brother, Jay Welder Cliburn; sister, Lela Cliburn; stepchildren Melissa Thormahlen, Madison Thormahlen, and Trey Thormahlen of Victoria; numerous nieces and nephews. John is also survived by his devoted dogs, Sadie, Anna and Abby.

Honorary pallbearers: John J. Welder, V., John J. Welder, VI., Rob Welder, Milton Greeson, Kerry McCan, Bob McCan, Chip Dence, Clive Runnels, Phil Sherwood, Bob Jones and John Burkhart.

Visitation will be held at Rosewood Funeral Chapel from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 28, 2011, at Evergreen Cemetery located on Vine Street with Father David Berger of Cuero officiating.
