U.S. Congressman. He attended the Cahaba Academy and with the start of the Civil War, entered the Confederate States Army as a Private in the Alabama Volunteers. He was later promoted to First Lieutenant of Infantry and remained in service until the end of the war. After the war, he resumed his studies at the University of Alabama, studied law, was admitted to the bar in December 1867 and commenced to practice law in Selma, Alabama. He was elected solicitor of Dallas County in 1868, appointed Sheriff of Dallas County in 1869, elected judge of the criminal court of Dallas County in 1870 and judge of the first judicial circuit, serving (1874-80). In 1885, he contested as a Republican the election of Charles M. Shelley to the Forty-eighth Congress and served the remainder of his term. He then was appointed US Attorney for the middle and northern districts of Alabama by President Arthur and was appointed by President Cleveland a member of the Board of Visitors to the US Military Academy at West Point, in 1894.
