Lois Kappes, 87, Ada, MN, died Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at Bridges Care Community, Ada, MN.

Lois Delma Bernstein was born July 10, 1923, in Breckenridge, MN, the daughter of William and Ella (Enochson) Bernstein. She was baptized at the Gospel Tabernacle in Fargo, ND. She grew up near Durbin, ND, and attended Casselton (ND) High School where she graduated in 1942. After graduation she furthered her education at Moorhead State Teachers College and Valley City (ND) Teachers College. Lois taught from 1946-1949 at a Grandin, ND, rural school. She also worked at the Herbst Department Store in Fargo. Lois was united in marriage to Sylvester Kappes on October 23, 1951, in Ada. They lived and farmed near Borup, MN, for many years before retiring in 1985 and moving into Ada.

Lois was an avid oil painter using oil pastels and enjoyed writing letters and poems. She chaperoned many class trips when her children were in school. She was also active with PTA & Christian Mothers. Lois enjoyed the outdoors, spending time in her garden and doing yard work. She also loved to visit with family and friends. Lois moved to Bridges Care Community in 2006.

Lois is survived by her children: Loretta (Larry) Nelson, Ada, MN, Sandra (Terry) Vangstad, Fargo, ND, Brent (Laurie) Kappes, Borup, MN, Kathy (Fred) Lamphere, Newell, SD; 8 grandchildren: Wendy Vesledahl (Jon), Mike Nelson (Jenny), Amy Vangstad (John), Eric Vangstad (Jenny), Bradley Kappes, Janelle Kappes, Jeremy Hoven (Tawna), Jamie Mailloux (Jamey); 3 step grandchildren: Terrisa Henry (Brandon), Brian Lamphere, Kimberlee Lamphere; 15 great grandchildren; one brother: Roger (Gladys) Bernstein, Bloomington, MN; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, and husband, Sylvester.

Funeral Service: 10:00am on Monday, June 13, 2011 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ada, MN.

Visitation: Sunday, June 12th from 5:00-7:00pm with a Prayer Service at 7:00pm at the church.

Burial: Ada Municipal Cemetery
